[Abstract]:In the 1980s, the cultural school represented by the Belgian translator Andrei Leverville and the English translator Susan Bassnett put forward the "cultural turn" in translation studies. When they examine the history of western translation and translation theory, they summarize the three modes of translation: the "Jelome Model", "Horace Model" and "Schlermah Model". The Jerome Model emphasizes the core position of the original text, therefore, the translator should reproduce the original text faithfully as much as possible. Horace Mode holds that the basic principle of translation is not the translator's faithfulness to the translated text, but to the translator's "customer", so the "customer" has become the translator's main consideration. Therefore, negotiation becomes the core concept of translation. Schlermach Model highlights the importance of "alienation" in translation, and argues that the purpose of translation is to take the target language readers abroad. The theory of "three models" has gained popularity in western translation studies and has been cited by many translation researchers. Some Chinese scholars have questioned this understanding. Unfortunately, no more scholars have carried out in-depth research on the "three models" theory. After a careful study of the history of Western translation, the author finds that the theory of "three models" is deficient in time dimension, trend of thought, translation method, source view, translator's position and the essence of translation. This article intends to carry on the thorough research to the "three modes" theory, uses the contrast analysis method? Text analysis and diachronic and synchronic methods aim at criticizing Horace Model and proposing Luther Model instead. There are five chapters in this paper. The first chapter is the introduction, which introduces the background, significance, purpose, research methods and writing framework of this study. The second chapter is a literature review, which introduces the tradition of western translation studies, the translation thoughts and cooperative achievements of Levell and Bassnett, and their "three models". Chapter three discusses the deficiency of the theory of "three modes", and analyzes the defects of Horace mode in terms of time dimension, trend of thought, translation method, source view, translator's position and the essence of translation. Chapter four summarizes the Luther Model by analyzing the translation thought, translation practice and historical influence of Martin Luther, and compares Luther Model with Horace Model. The fifth chapter is the conclusion of this paper that the formulation of "three modes" lacks real systematicness, and that "Horace mode" is not enough to form a "model", which is suggested to be replaced by "Luther model".
