[Abstract]:The study of metaphor has traditionally been limited to rhetoric and language. With the emergence of contemporary cognitive linguistics, people pay more and more attention to the cognitive mechanism in the process of English learning. At the same time, it is also found that the conceptual system that promotes human cognition is metaphorical. The conceptual system is the initiator and the main cognitive mechanism of language formation, so language is metaphorical. In the past two decades, the development of metaphor research in cognitive science has been more and more widely recognized. Lakoff and Johnson's "Conceptual metaphor Theory" has broadened the scope of metaphor research from the perspective of cognition. Cognitive theory holds that metaphor is not only a linguistic phenomenon, but also a cognitive phenomenon. It is a tool for us to recognize and understand the world. There are a lot of plant metaphors in language, but there is little research on it. The study of plant metaphor is limited to explain some metaphor phenomena from the point of view of similarity between metaphor and ontology, focusing on the effect and beautification of metaphor in the works. Metaphor is still not regarded as a cognitive style of human beings, and is analyzed from cultural meaning and associative meaning. At present, domestic scholars have not done much research on plant metaphorization and comparison of plant metaphors in English and Chinese. Previous studies on plant metaphor contrast between English and Chinese are mainly focused on the differences of their cultural meanings. The corpus is also limited to a few specific plant comparisons. I think its drawback lies in the lack of systematic discussion of the process of these plant metaphors projecting from the source domain to other target domains, ignoring the process of metaphor production and the cognitive process of the reader's understanding of metaphor, and not from a deeper level of thinking. A cognitive approach to plant metaphor. In view of this, this paper attempts to make a comparative analysis of plant metaphors in English and Chinese from the perspective of cognition. In this paper, descriptive and explanatory methods are used to explore the similarities and differences in the expression of plant metaphors between the two languages in detail. This paper not only studies the similarities and differences in description of English and Chinese metaphors from the perspective of cognitive metaphor, but also discusses the similarities and differences in the way of thinking behind them. Firstly, plant metaphors are the products of conceptual metaphors. Plant metaphors are used to understand and experience unfamiliar, abstract and elusive things. The projective patterns of plant metaphors in English and Chinese share common ground, which reveals that plant metaphors in English and Chinese also originate from physical experience and share a common psychological basis. At the same time, there are great differences in metaphorical expression between English and Chinese, which are due to the relativity of culture. Many unique cultures in China and the West have deeply influenced the thinking and language of China and the West. It is hoped that this study will enlighten foreign language learning and contribute to metaphor research.
