【摘要】：《世说新语》是魏晋南北朝时期志人小说的代表作,记载了汉末到东晋三百年间的轶事和言论,它既有极高的文学价值和欣赏价值,也是一部研究魏晋南北朝的文化百科全书。《世说新语》的唯一一本全译本由美国学者马瑞志(Richard B. Mather)翻译,1976年由密尼苏达州大学出版,2002年由密西根大学汉语研究中心再版。2007年中华书局出版的大中华文库汉英对照《世说新语》采用了Richard B. Mather的英译版本。《世说新语》英译本是《世说新语》对外传播的重要手段。本文从文化传播的角度出发,以2007年中华书局出版的大中华文库汉英对照《世说新语》的英译版本作为研究对象,通过系统的梳理和深入的研究,在前贤英译商兑的基础上,发现仍有部分词、句译文有待商榷,重点对其中出现的英译问题归纳总结,运用现代翻译理论进行剖析,为将来产生以传播中华文化为目的的流畅传神的重译本,提出可操作性的翻译策略以供参考。第一部分是引言,主要介绍了《世说新语》的文化价值和《世说新语》英译本的传播意义。第一章是《世说新语》的文本解读,分两个章节进行论述。第一节概括论述了《世说新语》的作者生平及其创作背景。(学界对《世说新语》的著作权的归属有两种看法,一种看法认为是刘义庆编撰了此书,一种看法是“成于众手”。本文采用第一种看法。)分析了《世说新语》的成书背景及作品的结构体系。全书独具匠心地分为三十六门,三十六门的排列大致遵循从褒义到贬义的次序,作品人物通过在不同门类中的表现呈现给读者一个丰富的艺术形象。第二节对《世说新语》的研究现状作了大致的勾勒。第三节介绍《世说新语》在中国文学史上的地位及英译价值。它在轶事小说中正式形成了一个被称为“世说体”的重要体式流派,和对后世“世说体”小说的创作有极其深远的影响。第二章是《世说新语》的英译现状和英译问题研究。第一节大体概述了现有的《世说新语》的英译版本和全译本美国作者马瑞志(Richard B.Mather)的生平背景。第二节重点研究大中华文库汉英对照的《世说新语》马瑞志的英译版本的英译问题。在这一章节通过解析马瑞志《世说新语》英译例证,运用翻译理论分别对文本中的文化术语、文化词以及典故成语的英译问题进行了研究、总结。由于中国与西方社会文化的巨大差异,文化术语被翻译成英文时不能全面反映所蕴含的文化内涵,在英文中找不到一个确切的对应词语；译本在行文中逐字翻译的词汇和语句在英语中没有对等的象征关系,造成目的语读者不能准确理解文化词的全部内涵；在源远流长的文化历史进程中,许多典故和成语已经成为积淀了中国文人审美意味的表达方式,发挥文学语言的暗示功能,使之达到语言高度集中与精练。如果译文中没有注释和背景介绍就会给读者造成阅读方面的阻隔。同时列举分析了由于对词句理解不当、对上下文语境把握不当和对文本考释不足等原因造成的误译。第三章探讨了《世说新语》的英译策略。阐释了音译策略、直译注释策略、意译策略、化境策略和语境语用策略的特点和在具体语境中的运用。
