[Abstract]:The purpose of prescriptive translation studies is to evaluate translation synchronously through the "standard-analysis-conclusion" model. Different aesthetic standards and aesthetic expectations will be produced under different social and historical conditions, so the evaluation of translated works will inevitably be influenced by the norms and theories at that time. Descriptive translation studies, on the other hand, advocate accepting and recognizing all the resulting translation results, exploring all the social and historical factors that affect their formation, as well as the position and role of the translated works in the target literary system, and make a comprehensive diachronic description and analysis of them. Descriptive translation studies can effectively avoid the interference caused by aesthetic differences and objectively describe the characteristics and values of all translated works. Therefore, this research method is very suitable for the study of translated literature many years ago or different translations of the same literary works produced under different historical conditions. A Dream of Red Mansions is such a work. In the nearly 160 years from 1830 to 1986, A Dream of Red Mansions has 10 English translations. Eight of them are excerpts or acronyms, and only two are full translations. If we evaluate these translated works from the perspective of prescriptive translation studies, I am afraid that most of them will be regarded as clumsy translations, not even called translation, let alone their value. Descriptive translation studies are providing them with an opportunity to be described objectively and fairly evaluated. The purpose of this paper is to study the 10 English versions of A Dream of Red Mansions through descriptive translation studies, to explore their respective characteristics and to reveal the social and historical factors behind them. After reviewing the development history of the translation of A Dream of Red Mansions, we will understand the historical significance and value of each translation. Descriptive translation studies also help us to better understand the underlying factors that affect the translation process and results. This paper also makes a contrastive analysis of the two complete versions of A Dream of Red Mansions by using Lefevere's theory of three factors.
