论《吉姆爷》中吉姆的双重身份

约瑟夫?康拉德在《吉姆爷》一书中将主人公吉姆塑造为一个虔诚的基督教英雄形象。他虽然经受多次失败和挫折,仍然矢志不渝地追求基督教意义上的自我完善,直到最终以自我牺牲来达到他的基督教理想,并被帕图桑当地人尊称为“吉姆爷”。康拉德试图通过吉姆的经历来劝说人们注重社会道德,尤其是基督教道德。由于当时英国社会正处于帝国主义对外疯狂扩张和掠夺的时期,康拉德提倡注重道德是具有一定积极意义的。但吉姆又同时被康拉德描述为帝国主义殖民扩张的代理人。他为帝国主义贸易公司工作,用各种不光彩的手段奴役殖民地人民。康拉德把一个帝国主义殖民扩张的代理人作为一个正面形象来推出,反映出他已经深受帝国主义殖民扩张思想的影响,尽管他的确意识到了殖民扩张的残酷性和不合理性。由于基督教提倡的道德与帝国扩张是根本对立的,吉姆的双重身份之间具有不可调和的矛盾,随着矛盾的不断激化,最终导致他陷入绝境,不得不以死作为解脱。本文共分三部分。第一部分论述了康拉德如何在吉姆身上体现出基督教英雄的形象,反映了小说提倡基督教道德精神的一面,从鼓励人们追求个人道德完美和不断完善自我的角度来看,具有积极的意义;然而在英国资本主义的现实生活中,这种以...
