【摘要】：曹雪芹(?1715-?1763)的《红楼梦》是四大名著之一,成书于清代。虽然曹雪芹经历了生活中的重大转折,并且深感世态炎凉,但他在《红楼梦》中体现了中国上层社会的审美取向,其叙述并未采用逻辑顺序和理论方法,更多地强调感性体验的特点,因而他的审美是典型的东方特点。由于作者特有的审美取向,所以该书的翻译对想要了解中国的外国读者十分必要。《红楼梦》中大量描写了中国传统文化及社会生活习惯.译者如何处理这些描写,及译者在这一过程中所展现的不同风格具有研究价值。本文运用刘宓庆的翻译审美理论来比较和分析霍克斯与杨宪益的《红楼梦》英译本。根据翻译审美理论,译者由于不同的翻译审美会采用不同的词句,段落及翻译策略。词汇层面,句法层面和篇章层面的区别形成了风格的标志。最基本的语言美源于“优化词语搭配”。声美,形美,意美缺一不可。这里面的“意美”还包括意义与意像。这就决定了译本是是否成功承载并传达原文的美。本文希望通过霍克斯与杨宪益的翻译审美进行描述性研究来分析这两位译者各自的翻译审美观点及其翻译写作风格。比较发现,因为其二人审美具有很大差异,所以其词语标记、句法标记和章法标记所表现出来的翻译风格相去甚远。总之,笔者认为,不同的行文风格和翻译审美决定不同的译出成果的审美再现。
