从译者主体性视角解读《红楼梦》两译本

【摘要】：《红楼梦》是中国历史上“前不见古人,后不见来者”的经典著作,自问世以来,一直广受欢迎。专家学者们对它的批注、考评和研究经久不息,并逐渐汇集成一门新的学问——红学。上世纪70年代末、80年代初,《红楼梦》两个全译本——英国汉学家戴维·霍克斯(David Hawkes)、约翰·闵福德(John Minford)翻译的The Story of the Stone和杨宪益(Yang Xianyi)、戴乃迭(Gladys Yang)夫妇翻译的A Dream of Red Mansions——继面世,随即出现了大量研究《红楼梦》翻译的文章,然而多数研究依据传统翻译理论模式,从文本比较和语言信息的转换出发,寻求译文与原文的各种对等,忽略了翻译活动中最活跃的因素——译者。迄今为止,几乎没有从译者主体性角度探讨两译本的研究。 当代文论中阐释学和接受美学的盛行以及翻译研究中描写翻译学的兴起与翻译研究的文化转向,使译者作为翻译主体的身份得以突显,学术界开始关注译者在翻译中的作用,译者主体性随之成为翻译研究的新课题。在这一时代背景下,本文作者将译者主体性研究纳入《红楼梦》的英译研究,试图寻找解读两译本的最佳途径。 本文通过追溯翻译史上专家学者们对翻译及译者的有关论述以及翻译批评思路的转换,将译者主体性研究置于当代文论和当代翻译理论的广阔视野中,科学地考察了译者主体性的内涵及其表现,进而把译者主体性的研究成果引入《红楼梦》的英译研究,主要从翻译目的、译者所处的社会历史语境、译者的文化取向和读者意识几方面,从宏观和微观两个层面,描述和解释两个译本的差异,从而解读两译本。研究发现:译者主体性视角是解读两个几乎同样成功而又各有千秋的《红楼梦》译本的有效途径。将译者主体性研究这一新课题引入举世注目的《红楼梦》英译研究,不仅有助于《红楼梦》英译研究的多样化和深入开展,而且有助于深化各自的研究领域,同时为翻译批评多元化提供有益的启示,并为某些翻译变形提供理论支持。
