【摘要】：托马斯·金是杰出的当代加拿大作家,他不仅在小说方面取得重要成就,而且是加拿大广播公司一档滑稽无线电广播系列节目的创始人。北美印第安彻罗基族人和德裔希腊人的混血血统造就了他的特殊身份,因此有研究者认为他作品里的一些人物可能刻画的就是他自身的经历和自身身份的探寻。 《麦迪逊河》是他的第一部重要的小说,该小说奠定了他在加拿大文学里不容忽视的地位。这部小说关注的主要是主人公威尔的“回家”和找寻身份的问题。小说《麦迪逊河》中,作者托马斯·金通过主人公威尔在某一印第安社区中的日常生活来反映整个民族的生活现状,关注的主要是与北美印第安人的社会身份,异族联姻,社区的重要性相关的一系列问题。 本论文主体部分分三部分论述威尔的身份困境。第一部分从主人公的身份定位,记忆中身份困境的回放和摇摆的双重身份等方面论述了身份困境的表现。第二部分基于社会因素,家庭悲剧和主人公的自我认知等方面论述了威尔的身份困境的原因。第三部分分析了作品中两个重要的创作技法,包括隐喻蒙太奇和讲故事的叙述方式,这两个创作技法帮助深化了文章论点。不同于之前研究印第安人身份问题的其他作品,本论文关注的主要是主人公威尔在两个不同社会环境中“游走”的尴尬身份,但最终他回到了印第安社区,找到了自己的身份。
