赛珍珠《水浒传》翻译的女性主义研究

【摘要】：赛珍珠(1892-1973)是历史上首位以中国题材作品获得诺贝尔文学奖的女性,作为一名杰出的作家,无论在其小说抑或非小说中,赛珍珠都始终关注并思考着妇女的命运和地位问题。她用笔书写男权大厦里的怨恨与反抗,力争为那些无声的中国女性赋予某种声音。同时,她也是首位把中国古典小说《水浒传》全文七十回本翻译成英语的西方人。这部前后耗时五年完成的译作一经出版,在西方世界受到普遍欢迎。但是其译本在中国却饱受批评,她的个性化翻译策略成为众矢之的。而有关探究赛珍珠《水浒传》翻译是否深受其女性主义思想影响的问题,却鲜有学者触及。鉴于此,本文借助女性主义翻译理论作为理论视角,并在此基础上提出了本文的研究框架,系统地分析了赛珍珠女性主义意识的形成,文学作品以及社会活动所蕴含的女性主义思想。在分析过程中,以赛珍珠译本为主,沙博理译本作为参照,对比法和文本分析法将贯穿全文,深入地探究赛珍珠《水浒传》翻译过程中所采用的女性主义翻译策略,希望能对其特殊的翻译行为作出解释。全文内容分六章展开。第一章为引论,介绍本文的研究背景、目的与内容、意义、方法以及全文的框架。第二章研究综述主要解决研究基础的问题,内容包括：(1)女性主义概述。指出女性主义的一般概念,三次女性主义运动高潮,以及其中出现的流派、人物及作品；女性主义的主要关注点,即父权制与性别；以及女性主义对翻译理论的影响,其中对女性主义与女性主义翻译理论的核心思想进行了梳理,指出女性主义翻译理论从女性主义角度强调翻译主体；强调翻译是政治行为以及努力消除翻译研究中的性别歧视。(2)女性主义翻译理论。该论述由四部分构成：①强调作者与译者地位的平等。首先揭示了传统翻译理论中的性别比喻以及原文至上论和作者中心论的观点。其次强调作者与译者的平等对话关系。②从女性主义角度重新阐释忠实。女性主义翻译理论提倡通过女性主义的“写作方案”来实现忠实,强调翻译是一项译者积极参与的写作活动。③重写是女性主义凸显女性主体的手段。在翻译实践中,女性主义译者通过有意识的选材以及翻译策略的选择,打破传统译论中“译者隐身”的观点,进而彰显译者主体地位。④赛珍珠的女性主义思想以及相关研究综述。第三章重点梳理赛珍珠之所以堪称“女性主义先锋”的前因后果。首先阐述赛珍珠女性主义思想的形成,来源于不同寻常的童年经历,早期社会经历以及婚姻家庭境况。其次,通过深入的文本调查揭示赛珍珠作品中所体现的女性主义意识。她同情妇女的命运、地位；希冀妇女自由选择婚恋；主张妇女受教育以及追求妇女身心的解放。再次,赛珍珠的女性主义社会实践,诸如“欢迎之家”和“赛珍珠基金会”的创建无不反映着赛珍珠是争取平等权利的积极倡导者。第四章重点揭示赛氏在其《水浒传》译本中所运用的女性主义翻译策略。作为一个双语人和女性主义先锋,赛珍珠视翻译为发挥主观能动性,为女性这一群体争取话语权,争取来自社会平等目光的一个机会。在她的译文中,她采用省略、增补以及干预的女性主义翻译策略来消除原文文本中的性别歧视,将自己的女性主义思想融入译作中。第五章则是全文的重点所在,以文本调查为主,辅以史料依据,揭示了赛珍珠在《水浒传》的英译过程中,对小说女性人物的褒扬。赛珍珠提倡对女性的尊重主要体现在咒骂语及女性称呼语的英译上；提倡男女平等体现在社会标记语以及汉语四字格成语的英译上；提倡女性敢于追求真爱在有关女色或眷恋男女关系时的措辞以及惯用语翻译上表现出来。作为译者,她通过语言表述提升女性的社会地位,改变她们的社会形象,实现女性的自我意识、自我觉醒和身份认同。第六章为结语,总结本文的主要发现和本研究的启示,指出本研究的不足并提出后续研究设想。赛珍珠作为一个女性主义的实践者,充分展示了她的女性主义思想,她的女性主义意识直接影响了对原文的理解和对译文语言的选择。赛氏译本揭示了根植于原文中的丰富内涵,运用个性化的翻译策略消除了原文所暗含的性别歧视,使失声和边缘化的女性得以重视。身为译者的赛珍珠,本着尊重与理解的态度向译语受众介绍异域的女性主义文化,唤起译语受众对受压迫女性的关注与关怀。赛珍珠是一位真正为女性写作、为女性言说的充满母性的女性。
