【摘要】：20世纪70年代，弗米尔第一次提出目的论的概念作为翻译和翻译活动的一个术语。根据目的论，翻译是一项有目的的行为活动。决定翻译过程的主要准则是整个翻译行为的目的。简单来说,译者的翻译目的决定翻译策略的选择。而归化和异化作为两种主要的翻译策略，，一直是中西方译者争论的焦点。目的论为翻译批评提供了一个新的视角，增加了翻译的可能性并且扩展了翻译策略的范围。 本论文主要从上述理论研究《红楼梦》两个英译本中的翻译。原文中的建筑文化和室内摆设，饮食文化及服饰文化的翻译被作为重点的例子研究。通过分析，根据他们各自不同的翻译目的，杨宪益主要采取异化的手段，而霍克斯主要选择归化策略。两种不同方法的运用充分地体现了他们在翻译过程中对翻译创造的严谨，做到了对原著负责，对读者负责。
