汉英死亡委婉语对比研究

死亡,是每个个体都无法逃避的一种亲身体验,也是哲学与宗教领域一个永恒的话题。无论哪个民族,使用何种语言,都无法回避对死亡的关注与探讨。汉语与英语作为世界上最为重要的两种语言,在死亡的表达方式上虽然千差万别,但有一个非常鲜明的共同点:回避死亡字眼,多用委婉语表达死亡。据悉,在英语语言中死亡委婉语的表达方式达400多种(刘纯豹,1993),而汉语相关的表达则接近480多种(张拱贵,1996)。这种数字上的巧合不仅说明死亡委婉语是一种语言现象,也同时说明死亡委婉语作为一种重要的社会文化现象而存在着。死亡委婉语的背后必定隐藏着重要的社会文化信息。 本研究围绕着三个中心问题展开:1.汉英死亡委婉语各自有什么不同点,以及造成这些差异的原因是什么;2.汉英死亡委婉语有哪些相似点,促成这些相似的原因又是什么;3.汉英死亡委婉语的对比研究带给汉英语言学习者以及跨文化交际者何种启示。本研究的理论框架主要源于语言与文化的关系理论以及Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck的价值取向模式,所运用的研究方法主要是对比分析与归纳总结。其中语料主要来源于张拱贵所著的《汉语委婉语词典》,以及刘纯豹所编的《英语委婉语词典》。 研究发现:汉英死亡委婉语存在着众多的差异性与共性。在研究过程中,笔者发现过去对委婉语的定义也存在着一些问题与不足,如对辞格与语言或言语概念混淆,定义中存在一些再定义的术语,定义外延过窄等问题。本研究虽立足死亡委婉语,但研究的内容却不仅仅局限于此,包含汉英社会方方面面的内容,而这些研究结果对跨文化交际与语言学习者有一定的借鉴意义。最后,笔者指出了本研究的不足与局限性,为今后的研究提出了一些指导性的意见与参考。
