论《嘉莉妹妹》中作为消费文化空间的剧院

【摘要】:西奥多·德莱塞被视为美国文学史上最具影响力和创造力的作家之一。他的作品《嘉莉妹妹》再现了处于十九世纪和二十世纪之交的美国的社会样貌。在二十世纪初期,美国社会面临转折点,新兴的消费文化和传统道德理念相互碰撞,丰盛的商品勾起了人们的消费欲望和对金钱的崇拜,刺激着人们的消费。在这本小说中,通过德莱塞的描写,一个生动而鲜明的消费社会跃然纸上,展现出了当时美国社会的虚荣之风。本文旨在以剧院作为切入点分析《嘉莉妹妹》中的消费文化。在十九世纪末的美国,作为休闲场所的剧院在人们的娱乐活动中扮演着重要作用。同时,作为消费空间的剧院可以看作是消费文化的载体,展现消费文化的特征。笔者通过对文本的研究,从三个角度分析小说中作为消费文化空间的剧院。首先,剧院的地理空间体现着消费社会的兴起。剧院十分重视其地理位置,装饰环境和宣传说明人们对娱乐休闲活动的追求和要求不断提升,体现出人们沉溺于物质享受和奢靡之风;其次,剧院的消费空间为人们的炫耀性消费提供了场所。拜金主义深深影响着剧院中的演员,观众和戏剧的编排。演员盲目崇拜金钱,热衷于追求物质享受;观众沉迷于炫耀性消费,借此展现自身的社会地位和财力;戏剧的编排趋向于展现上层阶级骄奢淫逸的日常生活,宣传拜金主义;最后,剧院的社会空间见证主人公社会地位的转变,同时区分人物的社会阶级。在消费社会中,社会阶层的流动性致使人们产生了身份的焦虑,从而展现不同的消费选择。由此,笔者指出,作为消费文化空间,剧院的兴旺发展见证了消费社会的兴起,体现了在消费文化的影响下,人们的消费行为和消费观念的变化,见证了人物社会关系的再生产及其命运的转变。
[Abstract]:Theodore Dreiser is considered one of the most influential and creative writers in the history of American literature. His work, Sister Carrie, reproduces the social outlook of the United States at the turn of the 19th century and 20 centuries. In the beginning of 20th century, American society is faced with a turning point. The emerging consumer culture and traditional moral concepts collide with each other, and abundant commodities arouse people's desire for consumption and worship of money, and stimulate people's consumption. In this novel, through Dreiser's description, A vivid and vivid consumer society leapt to paper, showing the vanity of American society at that time. This paper aims to analyze the consumer culture in Sister Carrie from the point of view of the theatre. In the United States at the end of 19th century, As a leisure place, the theatre plays an important role in people's entertainment activities. Meanwhile, the theater as a consumption space can be regarded as the carrier of consumer culture, showing the characteristics of consumer culture. This paper analyzes the theater as a consuming cultural space in the novel from three angles. Firstly, the geographical space of the theatre reflects the rise of the consumer society. The theater attaches great importance to its geographical location. Decorative environment and publicity show that people's pursuit and requirements for entertainment and leisure activities are constantly rising, reflecting people's indulgence in material enjoyment and extravagance; secondly, The theater's consumption space provides a place for people's conspicuous consumption. Money worship deeply affects the theater actors, audience and theatrical choreography. Actors blindly worship money, keen to pursue material enjoyment; audience indulges in conspicuous consumption. In order to show their social status and financial resources; drama arrangement tends to show the luxury of the upper class daily life, promote money worship; finally, the theater social space witnessed the transformation of the social status of the protagonist, In the consumer society, the mobility of the social stratum causes people to have identity anxiety, thus showing different consumption choices. Therefore, the author points out that, as a consumption cultural space, The flourishing development of the theatre witnessed the rise of the consumer society, reflected the change of people's consumption behavior and consumption concept under the influence of the consumption culture, witnessed the reproduction of the social relations of the characters and the change of their fate.
