[Abstract]:Naipaul is one of the most important writers in the 21 st century. His attitude to the third world was acutely sharp, but it did not prevent him from becoming a talented writer recognized by critics. Naipaul's diverse cultural identity in India, Trinidad, and Britain has enabled him to have unique insights into cultural, ethnic, and historical issues. The sense of rootlessness and the crisis of self-identity are reflected in his later works. In Half-Life and Demon, Naipaul explores the issue of identity crisis and records the journey to self-identity. Willie's escape and stay in every place is a reperception of self. Changes in self-perception have prompted Willie to pursue self-identity, and the journey has no end. The characters in the novel, including Willie, face loneliness and anxiety and are always on the journey of seeking self-identity. This thesis focuses on the marriage and political writing of the two novels, and aims to reveal the pursuit of self identity in the cycle of India, Africa and England. The author believes that marriage and politics in the two novels are not only the cause of the crisis of the characters' self identity, but also the way they shape their self identity. Self-identity is an important topic in modern literature. The self-identity of individual is not innate, but is the product of culture and race, and the change of space and time makes the self-identity more abundant. Based on the theories of Stuart Hall, Anthony Giddens and other scholars, this paper discusses the emergence of self-identity crisis of the protagonists in Naipaul's two works and the way they seek self-identity through marriage and politics. This thesis includes five chapters. The first chapter briefly introduces Naipaul and his works, combs the research status of the two works, Half-Life and Evil seed, and explains the main contents of this thesis. Chapter two probes into the background of the crisis of self-identity of the protagonist Willie. This chapter analyzes Willie's self identity confusion and anxiety under the influence of distorted marriage concept and chaotic postcolonial reality. Chapter three explores Willie's failure in his quest for self-identity in a hierarchical society. Willie tried to get rid of the crisis of identity through marriage and political activities and to re-establish his independent self-identity, but he fell into a state of loss and rootlessness, because marriage and politics were the tools of power struggle in the hierarchical society. Chapter four discusses Willie's rethinking of self identity in cosmopolitan urban space and reveals the hope of finding self identity. By reflecting on his journey to self-identity, Willie's understanding of marriage and politics has quietly changed. In the international urban space, inspired by a friend's choice of marriage, Willie began to accept his mixed identity. The fifth chapter will summarize the thesis. In this thesis, the identity issues in Naipaul's works Half-Life and Magic seed are related to marriage and political writing, in order to provide a new perspective for Naipaul's study.
