[Abstract]:Joyce Carol Oates is one of the most prolific and influential contemporary American writers. Daughter of the Gravedigger was published in 2007. The novel mainly describes the process of the construction of the dual cultural identity of the Schwats who immigrated from Germany to the United States in the 1930s and 1960s. Based on the criticism of the diaspora and the theories of William Edwards Berhardt Dubois and Stuart Hall on cultural identity, this paper attempts to analyze the formation process of Rebecca and Jacob's dual cultural identity. Combined with the behavior, language and religious culture of the characters, this paper analyzes the identity choices they make in the face of dual culture, and then discusses the feasible strategies for dealing with the dual cultural identity and overcoming the identity crisis in the context of the diaspora ethnic group. The full text is divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the author's life and works, briefly describes the theoretical framework of this paper, and puts forward the theme and arguments of this paper. The second chapter is mainly based on the theory of double cultural identity, through the study of Jewish diaspora history and Jewish national uniqueness of the Jewish identity shaping, as well as immigration to the United States on its Jewish identity influence and assimilation. This paper analyzes the causes of the American and Jewish cultural identities of the two main characters, Rebecca and Jacob. The third chapter mainly analyzes the father Jacob's choice to treat the double cultural identity, and discusses the influence of his choice on the shaping of his identity, that is, passively accepting the assimilation of American culture and insisting on his own Jewish identity. Its inability to integrate into American culture eventually leads to self-destruction. The fourth chapter mainly discusses Rebecca's choice and struggle between American identity and Jewish identity, and tries to explore how to construct a new and balanced American Jewish identity from Hall's Diaspora identity. The fifth chapter is the conclusion of this paper. Through the analysis of Rebecca and Jacob's cultural identity, the paper points out the strategy of the dispersed Jews to define their own identity in foreign cultures, and emphasizes the significance of the study of cultural identity to contemporary American Jewish literature.
