伊什梅尔·里德是美国最有才华、最有争议的后现代派作家之一,也是继拉尔夫·埃利森以来最受评论界关注的非裔美国男作家。褒扬者赞他是继马克·吐温之后美国文坛出现的最优秀的讽刺大师,是多元文化主义的积极倡导者:苛评者则给他贴过扑朔迷离的标签——“保守派、激进分子、黑人民族主义者、性别歧视者……自命不凡的狂人"等不一而足。的确,“后现代”、“有争议”、和“非洲裔”这些符号本身,足以说明伊什梅尔·里德小说研究所蕴涵的挑战与意义。伊什梅尔·里德以“新伏都教美学”思想挑战西方文明的“元叙事”,解构他称为“阿托恩主义”的形形色色的专制和总体化的势力。里德的小说始终以破除美国政治、文化和美学层面各种“阿托恩主义”的迷思为主旨,力图消除单一文化主义对人类心灵的侵淫。然而,里德提倡一种融合、开放的文化,其创作思想的核心是多元文化主义。因此,尽管里德坚持非裔文化传统——他的创作源泉来自亚文化的“伏都教”,他反对将该传统进行本质主义的界定。早在黑人民族主义盛行的年代,里德就以塑造正反不一的黑人人物形象、审视“黑人性”所蕴涵的黑人主体和黑人经验的异质性而大胆颠覆黑人本质主义及其文化再现方式。同样,里德宁愿犯“政治正...
