[Abstract]:Bastard out of Carolina is a semi-autobiographical work nominated by Dorothy Allison for the 1992 National Book Award. The true description of many cruel social phenomena in Alison's novels has attracted the attention of many critics. The purpose of this study is to use identity theory to analyze the marginal identity dilemma of the poor white group: the identity dilemma in which Gray struggles between two classes and the subordinate identity dilemma of several female characters in his works. In order to explore its causes and the resulting negative impact. This study argues that the root of identity dilemma lies in both internal group exclusion and external group bias. Poor white family members, such as Annie and Rileen, try to get rid of their poor white identity by changing their behavior and way of life. However, the stereotype of them among foreign groups has always made them unacceptable to the mainstream society. At the same time, as the representative of the female group, they are attached to the economy, emotion and so on. Although some women have tried to escape this attachment, they have been discriminated against by both men and women. In this kind of identity dilemma, they actively reject the inner group in order to pursue a higher level of identity, but they always suffer from the prejudice of the outside group in the process of changing themselves. In contrast, Gray acts as a receiver of inner group exclusion and as an actor of external group bias. On the one hand, because of his lack of success in his career and poor living conditions, he was denied his white middle-class identity, which he was eager to gain; on the other hand, although he married Anne, who was born to a poor white family, He thinks he is superior and disdains this group. Identity dilemma leads directly to negative emotions, such as inferiority complex and anger, as well as violence. The tragedy of Bones being abused by stepfather Gray and abandoned by their mother is essentially the result of identity dilemma. Therefore, an important condition to break through the dilemma of identity is to eliminate prejudice among groups or to establish multiple identities so as to avoid falling into the dilemma of identity.
