[Abstract]:American literature in the 19th century is a very important period in the history of American literature, because the United States in this period is undergoing profound social changes, industry is gradually replacing agriculture as the foundation of national development, and facing such drastic changes. People unconsciously miss the pastoral life of the past simple, quiet and beautiful. The idyllic ideal became a major image of society at that time, as a way to compete with industry represented by machines. On the basis of combing American literature from the colonial literature period to the 19th century, facing the period of social transformation, this paper combs out the formation and development of American idyllic ideal because of the invasion of machine, which is a new factor in the 19th century. The idyllic ideal was hit. The writers try to solve this problem by transforming the idyllic ideal in their works, but because this method is too idealistic and does not conform to the developing society, it ends in failure. However, this ideal is still of positive significance. It not only embodies a literary view of ecologicalism in harmony between man and nature, but also makes it an important part of American thought, even if the agricultural society is over. But this vision of a better life will still bring comfort to people.
