《最后的莫西干人》中库伯对印第安文化的矛盾态度

詹姆斯·费尼莫·库伯（James Fenimore Cooper,1789-1851）被誉为“美国长篇小说之父”,开创了革命历史小说、边疆小说和航海小说的先河,是最早赢得国际声誉的美国作家之一。库伯一生著述颇丰,最负盛名的是边疆题材五部曲《皮袜子故事集（The Letherstocking Tales,1823-1841）,其中《最后的莫西干人》（The Last of the Mohicans,1826）是最为出色的一部。这部小说具有强烈的美国民族特色,自问世以来便受到了学术界较广的关注。评论界从不同的角度对《最后的莫西干人》加以解读,诸如:小说中的人物刻画真实性、小说创作的历史时代背景以及库伯的内心意识形态,不断的进行深化和拓展以赋予其新的意义。本文将透过后殖民主义视野对《最后的莫希干人》进行解读,旨在分析库伯对待印第安文化的矛盾态度,希望能借此丰富对库伯的研究。首先,本文通过分析库伯的创作背景、成长环境以及欧洲传统文化的影响揭示其原始主义观念和西方文明中心主义观念这两种矛盾意识形态的形成。其次,一方面由于西方文明的逐渐衰微、腐败,库伯迫切向往一个远离传统欧洲宗教戒律、道德束缚的自...
