谭恩美的小说《喜福会》是美国华裔文学的代表作之一。该小说细致刻画了四对个性鲜明,具有代表性的中国母亲和在美国出生的女儿之间的情感故事。本论文以美国华裔作家谭恩美的作品《喜福会》为研究对象,分析和解读四对中国母亲和美籍华裔女儿在美国社会的生活以及工作,通过探究母亲与女儿不同文化身份和文化差异,对母女关系中问题和矛盾进行解读,反映出华裔们双重文化身份的微妙的态度和观念的变化,并且研究新一代华裔子女对于自身文化身份的进一步认知情况的原因和程度。 这些美籍华裔女性所遭遇的困难和进退两难的情况并非只存在于《喜福会》之中,它们在以华裔女性为主角的文学作品中成为主要的主题。老一代移民美国的华人为适应新的环境,不得不刻意融入美国强势文化,但对处于弱势的中国文化仍依恋不舍。他们的子女们则向往成为美国社会中真正的一员,渴望完全融入美国强势文化。随着全球一体化进程的加快,中国经济迅速发展,国力的日益增强,具有双重文化身份的移民在全球经济文化交往中开始扮演重要角色。新一代华裔对处于弱势的本族文化开始从一味排斥转而表现出好奇和兴趣,对其文化身份有了新的认知。
