通商口岸、新式教育与近代经济发展:一个历史计量学的考察

【摘要】:本文通过建立唯一的近代府级横截面数据,考察了通商口岸促进近代经济长期发展的效应和机制。研究表明:通商口岸对20世纪初的中国经济发展具有显著的促进影响,即距离通商口岸越近的地区,城市人口越多、人口密度越大、劳动生产率越高;通商口岸为近代新式教育的出现提供了条件,包括中国留学生、新式学堂和教会学校等新生事物首先在通商口岸兴起,再向内地推广辐射,进而促进了近代人力资本的发展,最终决定了20世纪初的经济发展水平。本文不仅丰富了现有关于历史冲击对经济发展长期影响的历史计量学文献,同时也为当前我国如何利用港口等交通枢纽建设来促进经济发展和人力资本积累提供了历史经验方面的借鉴。
[Abstract]:This paper investigates the effect and mechanism of commercial ports in promoting the long-term development of modern economy by establishing the unique cross-section data of modern government. The study shows that the trade port has a significant impact on the economic development of China at the beginning of the 20th century, that is, the closer to the port, the more urban population, the greater the population density, the higher the labor productivity; Trade ports provided conditions for the emergence of modern education, including the emergence of new things such as Chinese students, new schools of learning and church schools, which first rose in the ports of trade and then spread radiation to the interior, thus promoting the development of modern human capital. Finally determine the level of economic development at the beginning of the 20 th century. This paper not only enriches the existing historical metrology literature on the long-term impact of historical shocks on economic development, At the same time, it also provides historical experience on how to use port and other transportation hub construction to promote economic development and human capital accumulation.
