[Abstract]:Language is the main tool for human communication. It is the link between every different society and among its members. Communication is not only the exchange of words and information, but also the interaction of thoughts, ideas, feelings and emotions. The correct use of idioms is a major obstacle and challenge to effective communication in foreign language communication. The traditional view is that idioms have no motive and their formation is arbitrary. However, cognitive linguists believe that some idioms are inspired by conceptual structures independent of language. Idioms are an important part of language and have metaphorical characteristics. Many idioms in Chinglish are based on underlying conceptual metaphors. This thesis will compare and contrast Chinese and English idioms in order to better understand the underlying metaphors, in other words, to understand the mode of thinking of the target language. There are abundant idioms and metaphors in both Chinese and English. Idioms play an important role in both Chinese and English. However, it is difficult to understand the meaning of these idioms if they cannot understand the culture and thinking behind these expressions. The idioms in Chinese and English are rich in history, culture, custom and so on, and contain some idioms, special thoughts and so on. Cognition is the core psychological principle and process that provides structure, organization and meaning for human experience and behavior (Thompson 1975). Each society provides its members with stylized cultural information that enables them to understand the social and natural environment in which they live. Members of both Chinese and American societies lack a natural understanding of other stereotypical cultural messages. Only when the latent conceptual metaphors of idioms can be fully understood, can language learners understand the stereotyped cultural information or mode of thinking in the target language and better integrate them with the concepts and expressions of the native language. The author hypothesizes that understanding the cognitive processes that affect Chinese idioms can contribute to language acquisition.
