[Abstract]:With the acceleration of the process of world economic integration, China has gradually integrated into the world economy. Cross-cultural communication has become an indispensable part of cultural, trade, political and economic cooperation among countries in the world. Human communication consists of verbal communication and non-verbal communication. Verbal communication has been paid more attention since ancient times because of its important role in daily life communication, but the silent language of non-verbal communication is easy to be ignored. Research shows that non-verbal communication in human communication accounts for about 65%, while the remaining 35% is achieved by verbal communication. It can be seen that non-verbal communication plays an important role in human information exchange. As an important part of non-verbal communication, body language is of great value. Body language is the product of specific cultural background and contains rich cultural color. With the help of two different cultures, China and the United States, this paper explores the differences in body language in the context of Chinese and Western cultures, thus reducing conflicts and obstacles for cultural exchanges between China and the West. Based on Helfsky's theory of cultural dimension, this paper makes a detailed comparison and study of Chinese and American posture, gestures, facial expressions, eyes and body contact behavior. The results of the questionnaire survey in this paper provide detailed and persuasive data for the study of Chinese and American body language, so that the differences can be concluded and analyzed systematically. Then the author further expounds the reasons of the differences between Chinese and American body language by using the theory of dimension and case study. Finally, the author puts forward some suggestions for improving intercultural communicative competence. The conclusions are as follows: body language is an important part of culture, which contains great cultural value and is a valuable asset shared by mankind. The analysis of dimensionality theory shows that in high-context China, people tend to express their thoughts in body language rather than in body language, and they usually maintain a close body distance in communication. In low-context America, people prefer direct communication and rich facial expressions. In addition, in collectivist China, influenced by Confucianism, people prefer to rely on each other and maintain a relatively close relationship between relatives and friends in their daily lives, while in the case of the United States, which is influenced by Christianity, People adhere to individualism, usually in the communication between the two sides have a certain physical distance, try to avoid crowded public places. In cross-cultural communication, we should accept the differences of foreign cultures, learn to understand and tolerate different body language in communication, and strive to improve the awareness and competence of cross-cultural communication.
