[Abstract]:Traditional translation theory pays more attention to the translation between texts, neglecting the influence of historical, social, cultural and political factors on translation. The emergence of postcolonial translation theory in the 1980s paid more attention to the influence of the unequal power relationship hidden behind the translation on the translator and his translation. From this perspective, translation is placed in a broader context. The theory of post-colonialism introduces political factors into translation studies and provides a new perspective for translation studies. Under the background of cultural globalization, the cultural turn of translation studies makes the translator's position manifest, and more scholars begin to study the translator's subjectivity. In order to achieve the purpose of translation, the translator exerts his subjective initiative to complete the translation. However, the exertion of the translator's subjective role is also restricted by a series of subjective and objective factors. There are two most representative translators in the English version of Water margin: Pearl Buck and Sidney Shapiro. Pearl Buck devoted her life to the cultural exchanges between the East and the West. She had special feelings for China; her dual cultural identity and her experience in China made her deeply sympathize with Chinese farmers. It was the first person who translated Water margin into English and introduced it to the West. Sidney Shapiro loved Chinese culture and began to translate Chinese literature at the beginning of the founding of New China. He devoted more than 50 years to the spread of Chinese and Western culture. He had similar life experience to Pearl Buck. The two men made important contributions to the promotion of cultural exchanges between the East and the West. From the perspective of post-colonialism, this paper takes Pearl Buck and Sidney Shapiro's "Water margin" translation as an example to analyze the expression of the translator's subjectivity in a specific social and cultural background. In order to better achieve the translation goal, the two translators, on the premise of being faithful to the original text, give reasonable play to their subjective initiative and, under the influence of power differences, analyze how they embody their subjectivity in the process of translation. Regarding the choice of translation strategy, Pearl Buck is mainly dissimilation, Sidney Shapiro is mainly domesticated, but both versions have the feature of heterozygosity. From the perspective of post-colonialism, this paper probes into the translator's subjectivity through text analysis, and explains the application of the theory in the translation of literary works more clearly, with a view to perfecting the application of post-colonialism theory in translation. To contribute to the cultural exchange between East and West.
