[Abstract]:Modern cognitive linguistics holds that metaphor is omnipresent and plays an important role in people's daily communication. Because of different nationalities, social and cultural backgrounds, people's cognitive and thinking styles are often different. Metaphors that reflect people's way of thinking have different linguistic expressions in different social and cultural backgrounds. The translation of metaphor has become a difficult point in interpreting. The purpose of this paper is to find out effective metaphorical interpretation methods by studying the interpretation of metaphors in Prime Minister's press conferences from 2003 to 2012. Relevance theory is a cognitive theory put forward by Sperber and Wilson. Relevance theory holds that metaphor belongs to general discourse and does not require special explanatory power. Secondly, as a special cross-lingual communication, interpreting is a dual ostensive-inferential process. Therefore, the optimal relevance principle in relevance theory can guide metaphorical interpretation. This paper attempts to study metaphor translation in interpreting from the perspective of relevance theory. This paper first explains the writing motivation, writing significance and data collection methods. The second part is an overview of metaphor, including metaphor definition, classification, and previous metaphorical interpretation studies. Then the relevance theory which guides the study of metaphorical interpretation is introduced. Finally, the theory and practice are combined. According to the definition and classification of metaphor, the author analyzes the collected data of the Premier's press conferences from 2003 to 2012, and counts the number of metaphors and the translation methods of metaphors used in the press conferences each year. According to the reservation of metaphorical images, the translation methods are divided into four categories: preserving the original language image, transforming it into the target language image, retaining the original language image and explaining it, and removing the image. After statistics on the proportion of four different translation methods in metaphorical interpretation, in order to help the interpreters to complete their interpretation tasks better, the author analyzes the reasons for the different methods used by the interpreters in the interpretation process, and summarizes the conditions for the use of the various methods. That is, the interpreter tends to retain the metaphorical characteristics of the source language when the cultural universal metaphor is encountered in the interpreting, but in the face of the culture-specific metaphor, if there is a metaphor with similar meaning in the target language, it can be transformed into the target language metaphor, if it does not exist. Moreover, metaphor is repeatedly emphasized in the source language, which can be explained on the basis of preserving the metaphorical characteristics of the original language. However, due to the time-limit and urgency of interpreting tasks, interpreters tend to remove the metaphorical features in the face of cultural specific metaphors.
