[Abstract]:Jane Smiley is one of the most outstanding contemporary female writers in the United States. Among Smiley's numerous works, his novel "1,000 acres" published in 1991 is the most representative and most famous, and he won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Reviewer Award in 1992. Smiley is the best at describing the subtleties of complex relationships, especially the changes in people's relationships in family life, so most of her works focus on family life. And < 1,000 acres is no exception. < 1,000 acres is the main clue in the context of the economic turmoil in the early 1980s in the United States and the decision by farmer Larry to distribute 1,000 acres to his three daughters. The contradictions and conflicts between the characters revealed the pursuit of identity by the men and women on the surface of the seemingly peaceful farm life. From the perspective of the theory of identity correlation in the study of social culture, this paper will interpret the deeper purpose of the main characters in "1000 acres" in the behavior of family conflict and property struggle. As a representative of women in gender inequality, Ginny has always played the role of a meek daughter, a close sister, and a virtuous wife; however, in the face of patriarchal family constraints, the shackles of traditional ideas and the plight of women in marriage, Ginny's self-consciousness was gradually awakened, and by constantly fighting with her father, getting rid of her dependence on her sister and leaving her husband, she finally tore off the label of traditional identity and rebuilt and established her gender identity as a woman. In the face of a series of social and family dilemmas, the main male characters in the novel also try their best to pursue their own identity. Larry, at odds with his family, had to regain the status of "ruler"; Taylor was patient to become a successful farmer; Pitt was showing himself in order to be recognized by his wife and father-in-law; Jess has been out there to understand himself. Finally, it is concluded that the struggle and anxiety between both sexes and family members are due to the pursuit of identity, and identity is not the same. Only by constantly pursuing and establishing one's own identity can the meaning of existence be realized. By "1000 acres", Smiley reveals the significance of the search for identity in modern society to literary works as well as to people in real life.
