【摘要】：芥川龙之介是日本近代著名短篇小说家、新思潮派的杰出代表。他与森欧外、夏目漱石一起被誉为“二十世纪前半叶日本文坛的三大巨匠”，素有“鬼才”之称。芥川龙之介通过借鉴皮埃尔·洛蒂的观察方法，从而对自己的国家有了更清醒客观的评价。通过研究《开化的杀人》、《开化的丈夫》、《舞会》、《偶人》等以文明开化为题材的一系列作品，可以看出芥川龙之介对于日本文明开化在借鉴发达国家先进经验的方面给予充分肯定的同时，，又不得不清醒而痛苦地认识到流于表面的东施效颦并不能够给日本带来真正长久的繁荣发展。短篇小说《舞会》以日本文明开化最为鼎盛的时期、同时也是日本国民心理开始燃起“年轻的浪漫主义”的时期——“鹿鸣馆时代”为背景，以“充分展现了开化期日本少女之美”的明子暗喻鹿鸣馆时代一派歌舞升平的日本文明开化，并以H老夫人被限制的人生状态暗喻盲目狂热的文明开化最终难以逃脱走向没落的时代命运。这部芥川龙之介的文明开化题材的代表作品《舞会》反映出了芥川龙之介本人对日本文明开化的看法，即所谓“鹿鸣馆时代”就像日本近代化过程中疯狂绽放的有名无实的烟花一样，虽有“刹那的感动”，但终究转瞬即逝，仍令人感到悲伤失望。
