基于布朗语料库的《喧哗与骚动》语言特色研究

【摘要】：威廉·福克纳（1897-1962）是美国20世纪最著名的小说家之一，并于1949年因对现代小说强大而特殊的贡献而被授予了诺贝尔文学奖，由此奠定了其在世界文坛上举足轻重的地位。他一生写了19部长篇小说、75部短篇小说和2个诗集，其中大多数作品以美国南方为背景，发生在以其家乡小镇“新奥克斯佛”为原型而虚构的“约克纳帕塔法县”范围内。《喧哗与骚动》（1929）是福克纳的代表作品，标志着其写作风格的成熟，因为在这部作品中他使用了包括多角度叙述、内心独白、长句子和意识流等多种文学表现手法。当然，对这些艺术手法的研究也成为国内外学者研究的热点。本论文的研究目的在于运用布朗语料库从词汇和句法两个层面对《喧哗与骚动》的语言特点进行对比分析研究。在词汇层面，这篇论文从小说文本的词数、词长、词频和关键词四个方面解析这部小说的语言特点。作品中的四个叙述者的语言使用有很大差别，为此，福克纳通过不同的语言素材和写作技巧来展现每个叙述者的身份和接受教育的水平。在句法层面，本论文从句长、并列和从属关系上分析《喧哗与骚动》中的语言特征，作品中的每个叙述者的话语词汇选择、句子长度都向读者透露出这些叙述者的身份地位和性格特点。小说中，威廉·福克纳使用了复杂多样的句子结构和语法结构来表达这部小说复杂的主题和人物特点。以布朗语料库为参照语料库，本论文作者运用两种计算机软件从参照语料库和研究语料库—《喧哗与骚动》中提取信息。布朗语料库是60年代W. Nelson Francis和HenryKucera在布朗大学创建的一个著名语料库，是由两个综合文本类型，即新闻信息类和虚构想象类构成。虽然这个语料库的编辑工作发生在美国传统语言学理论占主导地位的非常时期，但目前已经在各个学科领域的计算机分析，如语言学分析、统计学分析、心理学分析和社会学分析中得到广泛应用。由于布朗语料库包含了18种不同的文体，本文作者只选择与研究语料库对应的K-R想象文体部分作为对照语料库进行研究，因为想象文体部分主要包含普通小说、神秘侦探小说、科学小说、西方冒险小说、浪漫爱情小说和幽默小说共126个文本。由于这些小说都发表于十九世纪六十年代的美国，通常被人们视为代表美国现代英语的一些特点，因此，可以通过这些语料来分析福克纳的作品。此外，《喧哗与骚动》发表于1929年，与布朗语料库中的二十世纪六十年代的那些作品有共同的语言特点，将这部小说与布朗语料库进行对比诠释可以更清楚地看出《喧哗与骚动》的语言特征。正是基于这些可行性特征，本论文作者对《喧哗与骚动》的四个组成部分进行了拆分并比较出其语言的特点。一般而言，基于布朗语料库解释语言特质属于语料库方法论的应用。为此，本论文作者基于语料库分析《喧哗与骚动》与传统的文学分析方法相比具有以下特殊性。首先，因为计算机软件可以自动获取信息，相比人工收集信息，这是一种更为客观、可靠而且有效的方法。第二，电子版文学作品已成为现代文学研究的趋势，而借助计算机软件，研究者能够更轻松地处理大量电子版文学文本。第三，语料库的运用使研究者能够对整个文本进行全面分析，并且可以对不同的文本作比较研究。在本论文所使用的两个重要的计算机软件：WordSmith和AntConc中，WordSmith是一个功能强大的软件综合包，包含了索引、词单、关键词、分割、文本转换和文件查看等功能；而AntConc是一个相对简单的索引程序，包含与WordSmith类似的功能。这两个工具都被广泛地应用于语料库语言学的研究和实验性研究之中。本论文由六章构成。在第一章中，本文作者简单介绍了威廉·福克纳、《喧哗与骚动》、布朗语料库和研究结构的细节；在第二章中，回顾了国内外学者对《喧哗与骚动》所进行的评述和研究，从中感悟到这部小说所具有的重要文学价值和语言学研究价值，同时总结了布朗语料库的研究现状；在第三章中，系统地讨论了本篇论文的理论框架，包括文体、文体学的定义和语料库语言学的理论；在第四章中，作者着眼于基于语料库的研究方法的叙述，包括研究工具的介绍和“描写、解释和评价”研究过程的论述；在第五章中，通过数据检索和数据对比分析，，研究得出《喧哗与骚动》中四个不同叙述者在词汇和句法方面具有不同的语言特点，从中领略到福克纳精湛的语言运用能力，本部分也构成了本论文的主体部分；最后一章是整个研究的结果部分，在明确指出本研究成果的同时，既肯定了语料库分析方法的可行性，又指出了这种方法依然存在的缺陷，以及在未来本研究将运用语料库的新技术对《喧哗与骚动》进行更高层次上分析，以弥补这些缺陷。
[Abstract]:As one of the most famous writers in the 20th century in the United States and in 1949 , he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature by his powerful and special contribution to modern novels . He wrote 19 novels , 75 short stories and 2 poems . Most of these works in the southern background of the United States , which marked the maturity of his writing style . Of course , he used many kinds of literary expression techniques , including multi - angle narrative , inner monologue , long sentence and stream of consciousness .

The purpose of this thesis is to use Brown Corpus to analyze the linguistic features of this novel from four aspects : vocabulary and syntax . At the lexical level , the thesis analyzes the characters of the novel in four aspects : the word length , the word length , the word frequency and the key word . In this paper , the author uses different language materials and writing techniques to reveal the identity and character of each narrative . In the novel , William Forks uses a complex sentence structure and grammatical structure to express the complex subject and characters of the novel .

Using Brown Corpus as the reference corpus , the author uses two kinds of computer software to extract the information from the reference corpus and the research corpus - - the noise and the disturbance . The Browns corpus is the W . The author only chooses K - R imaginary style part corresponding to the study corpus as a reference corpus , because it contains 18 different styles , and it is based on the characters of linguistic analysis , statistics analysis , psychology analysis and sociology analysis .

This thesis is composed of six chapters . In Chapter 1 , the author simply introduces the details of William Fook , the noise and the disturbance , the Browns corpus and the research structure .
In the second chapter , the author reviews the comments and studies of scholars at home and abroad on the noise and the disturbance , from which it has learned the important literary value and linguistic value of the novel , and summarizes the current research situation of Brown Corpus .
In the third chapter , the paper systematically discusses the theoretical framework of this thesis , including the definition of style , stylology and the theory of corpus linguistics ;
In chapter 4 , the author focuses on the description of corpus - based research methods , including the introduction of research tools and the discussion of " description , explanation and evaluation " research process ;
In the fifth chapter , through the analysis of data retrieval and data comparison , it is concluded that there are different linguistic characteristics of four different narrators in the noise and the rioting in the lexical and syntactic aspects .
The last chapter is the result part of the whole research . At the same time , the author points out the feasibility of the corpus analysis method and points out the defects that the method still exists , and makes a higher level analysis of the noise and the disturbance in the future by using the new technology of corpus in the future , so as to compensate for these defects .
