[Abstract]:James Hilton is a famous English writer. He has written many famous novels. One of the most influential is the lost Horizon. When the lost Horizon was published, the novel was a great success for Hilton. In this novel, Hilton describes the pure land of Shangri-La. Shangri-la was immediately known to all and was constantly searching for the land. Up to now, there are more and more researches on this novel at home and abroad. Many scholars have discussed Shangri-La as a perfect combination of China and the West, with little analysis of post-colonialism in the novel. Based on the theory of colonialism, this paper discusses the post-colonialism in Horizon from three aspects: politics, economy and culture. It also exposed Hilton's postcolonial ideas. This thesis consists of preface, chapter one, chapter two, chapter three and conclusion. In the preface of the paper, the author mainly introduces the life of author James Hilton, the main plot of the novel the lost Horizon. A brief introduction to the present situation of the study of the vanishing Horizon and the research method of the thesis, the theory of post-colonialism. The main body of the thesis consists of three chapters. In the first chapter, the author analyzes Shangri-La 's political rights from three aspects. The first is that Westerners hold the political leadership of Shangri-La. They use the political, religious center of the Lama Temple as their political governing body. The second is that Westerners have deprived the people of Shangri-la of their democratic right to vote. Shangri-La people do not have the most basic political rights, but controlled by Westerners. The third aspect is that Shangri-La has obvious unequal political status. Westerners are obeyed as high-ranking leaders who rule Shangri-la. The people of Shangri-La were placed at the highest level, at the mercy of Westerners. In the second chapter, this thesis studies Shangri-la 's economy from three aspects. The first is that Westerners snatch Shangri-La 's natural resources, gold and human resources. With these precious resources, westerners consolidate their own capitalism. The second is the expansion of Western markets in Shangri-La to ease the West's economic crisis. The third aspect is that westerners hinder the people of Shangri-La from learning some science and technology to improve their production and restrict the economic development of Shangri-La. In the third chapter, this thesis studies Shangri-la 's culture from three aspects. The first is that Westerners despise the religion of Shangri-La. They bring Christianity to Shangri-La, forcing the Shangri-La people to practice Christianity. The second aspect is that Westerners regard the traditional culture with Chinese symbol as the "other" culture. Shangri-La people began to pursue Western culture, and forget their own culture. Third, Westerners wanted to change the ideas of Shangri-La people, and then the Shangri-La people accepted themselves as slaves to Westerners. In the conclusion part, the author points out Hilton's thought of post-colonialism. Although Hilton describes a place far from the West, Shangri-La is still full of Western elements. Hilton can never get rid of the superiority thought as a Westerner, never forget that only westerners are "center", while Oriental people are at the edge of "other". Shangri-La in the novel has become a subsidiary of the West.
