《法国中尉的女人》：一部非女性主义小说

英国作家约翰·福尔斯是当代英国文坛享有盛名的作家。他的代表作《法国中尉的女人》自1969年问世以来,为福尔斯赢得了很大的荣誉,同时也在评论界及读者中引起了强烈的反响。纵观有关该小说的评论,许多评论家认为小说的女主人公萨拉是一位女权主义的代表人物,本文尝试借用女性主义文学批评理论,尤其是采用激进女权主义有关父权制的论述,来探讨男性作家在处理两性关系时所采取的立场和态度,文章认为,尽管作者塑造了多重身份于一身的萨拉,然而对萨拉缺乏正面清晰的描述,读者对于萨拉的了解完全来自查尔斯及叙述者等的间接叙述,鲜明地反映出作者所强调的男性意识和男性视角。小说的故事情节集中围绕查尔斯展开,而萨拉的真实面目却始终笼罩于神秘面纱的背后,她甚至没有真正的话语权,在故事情节的发展中只是充当“催化剂”,为查尔斯带来惊喜,并促使他不断走向成熟。因而,无声的萨拉只是小说的中心人物,而不是女主角。而小说的三重结尾则主要体现出作者的存在主义观点,并非体现了萨拉真正获得自由。借用女性主义文学批评理论,文章认为,尽管福尔斯自认为维护女性利益,自认为是一位女权主义作家,然而男权社会根深蒂固的影响使他不可避免地成为不平等两性关系...
