Creating Defensible Space in the Wildland-Urban Interface: The Influence of Values on Perceptions and Behavior

We examined the effect that value orientation to forests and wildland fire management has on an individual's decision to create defensible space around his or her residence in the wildland-urban interface.

Value orientation groups differed in attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavior control toward creating defensible space.

In addition, relative effects of these perceptions on intention to create defensible space differed across groups.

The findings provide important empirical support for the postulates of defensible space theory by showing that building size affects personal crime and fear of crime through residents' control and use of the space outside their apartments.

Crime has long been thought to be intimately associated with the physical environment in which it occurs. Theoretical and empirical development over the past 30 years has demonstrated that the relationship is complex and varies substantially at diiferent level of spatial and social environment. This artical indicates that defensible space, neighborhood and architecture scale, land using and spatial structure are related to territoriality and management.

It has been bringing out a new round of investigation into the relationship between city environment and city crime. Now the CPTED among those research is gaining much momentum and attention. The two theories and their relationship are expounded. It is beneficial to take in foreign experiences and apply them to the urban and community development in China. But the CPTED is limited to some extent and it is part of a comprehensive crime prevention program. There must be a difference between reducing the motive for crime by social prevention and reducing the opportunity for crime by physical prevention. Motive reduction and opportunity reduction should come into combination.
