[Abstract]:In 20th century, Doris Lessing was one of the most prominent and prolific writers in the literary world. In 2007, she was the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. "singing in the grass" is her first important work. The novel tells the tragic story of the white woman Mary Turner in the colonial southern Africa. To begin with the murder of a white housewife by Moses, a black male slave. Then, in a flashback, Mary's life from a bitter childhood to a tormented marriage is recounted. From the perspective of postcolonialism and feminism, this paper explores the racial and gender otherness in the novel. This paper mainly applies the concept of "other" in said Orientalism and Bovova's discussion on female "other". This paper also applies Foucault's theory of discipline power as a supplementary principle. On support. In addition to the introduction and conclusion of the two chapters. There are three chapters in the main part of this thesis. The second chapter discusses Mary's identity with the western capitals. Because of Mary's racist prejudice and deep fear of the black threat on the mysterious land of Africa. The third chapter analyzes the emotional and sexual repression that Mary suffered as a female other under the influence of patriarchal culture. It is precisely because of this profound repression. Mary is unable to stop Moses' genuine concern for her and his sexual temptation to be strong. Chapter 4th explores Mary's painful struggle between the capital self and the inner self of the Western race. This contradiction leads her to. Split inside. It also brought her tragic death.
