功能文体学视域下的《重游巴比伦》探析

【摘要】：菲茨杰拉德(F. S. Fitzgerald)是20世纪美国最伟大的作家之一,共创作了四部长篇小说和一百五十篇短篇小说。学术界对于菲茨杰拉德小说的研究,大多集中在《了不起的盖茨比》,但对于他的短篇小说代表作《重游巴比伦》的研究则比较少。鉴于此,笔者试图从功能文体学视角来解读《重游巴比伦》,从而探寻并揭示菲茨杰拉德内心深处的彷徨与呐喊。功能文体学是以韩礼德的系统功能语法理论为基础的文体学理论,其核心是利用语言三大元功能——概念功能、人际功能和语篇功能在语言中的体现来剖析文本。功能文体学理论着眼于语言的实际应用及语言的功能性,借助对语篇的观察和数据统计来验证假设,因此具有较强的说服力。本文将在功能文体学的理论基础上,对短篇小说《重游巴比伦》进行解读,从体现语言的元功能对小说的人物特征进行详尽的分析,对具体的语句所体现的功能频率分布进行统计、比较和分析,来突出主人公查理矛盾的内心世界。根据功能文体学的理论,小说的概念功能表现为及物性系统,主要体现在物质过程、心理过程和关系过程上；小说的人际功能表现为语气和情态上,小说以陈述语气和情态附加词为主；在语篇功能方面,小说以无标记主位为主,并使用了必要的连接手段。通过具体的文本分析可以发现,主人公查理的悲剧不仅是他本人的悲剧,也是“爵士时代”的悲剧,是20世纪初期美国社会生活的一个缩影,是一代人悲惨命运的典型。以功能文体学视角来阐释小说人物性格的方式,将个人悲剧与时代背景、情感与现实、期待与无奈的对比较为完美地揭示出来,更为直观地表现了小说的主题,从而为小说的当代读者提供了一个解读维度。
[Abstract]:Fitzgerald F. S. Fitzgerald is one of the greatest American writers in the 20th century, who wrote four novels and 150 short stories. Most of the studies on Fitzgerald's novels focus on the Great Gatsby, but less on his masterpiece, "revisiting Babylon". In view of this, the author tries to interpret "revisiting Babylon" from the perspective of functional stylistics, so as to explore and reveal the loss and cry in Fitzgerald's heart. Functional stylistics is a stylistic theory based on Halliday's systemic functional grammar theory, the core of which is to analyze the text by using the three metafunctions of language: conceptual function, interpersonal function and textual function. The theory of functional stylistics focuses on the practical application of language and the functionality of language and verifies the hypothesis with the help of textual observation and statistical data, so it is very persuasive. Based on the theory of functional stylistics, this paper interprets the short story "revisiting Babylon", and analyzes the characters of the novel in detail from the metafunctions of language. This paper makes statistics, comparison and analysis on the distribution of functional frequencies embodied in specific sentences to highlight the inner world of Charlie's contradiction. According to the theory of functional stylistics, the conceptual function of the novel is the system of materiality, which is mainly embodied in the process of matter, the process of psychology and the process of relationship, and the interpersonal function of the novel is the expression of mood and modality. In the aspect of discourse function, the novel is dominated by unmarked theme, and the necessary connective means are used. Through the concrete text analysis, we can find that the tragedy of the protagonist Charlie is not only his own tragedy, but also the tragedy of the "Jazz Age". It is a microcosm of American social life in the early 20th century and a typical tragic fate of a generation. From the perspective of functional stylistics, the comparison between personal tragedy and the background of the times, emotion and reality, expectation and helplessness is revealed perfectly, which shows the theme of the novel more intuitively. Thus provides a reading dimension for the contemporary readers of the novel.
