[Abstract]:Jacob's Room is Virginia Woolf's third novel, which shows the life of Jacob Flanders, his childhood, college, emotion, trip to Greece and the end of the battlefield. The novel was written after World War I and published in 1922, along with Eliot's the Wild Land and Joyce's Ulysses. The publication of these three books marks the arrival of the peak of British and American modernism. However, compared with the works of contemporary male writers and Woolf's recognized classics, the Room of Jacob has not received sufficient attention and appreciation from the critics. The purpose of this paper is to interpret the form and theme of "missing", and to highlight Woolf's philosophy of life and its enlightenment to the present human condition. First of all, Woolf's lack of individual and modern collective experience is the main cause of novel creation. On the other hand, Woolf was struck hard by the death of her brother Soapy, who had a strong desire to write novels in memory of the dead. On the other hand, Woolf was deeply aware of the confusion, loneliness and alienation of people in modern society. Hope to reveal the plight of modern people through novels. Furthermore, Woolf breaks the form of realistic novels and creates new forms to express "missing" experiences. On the one hand, the author abandons the traditional novel plot and narrates "missing" in a piecemeal way. She uses discontinuous scenes to present a complex and chaotic modern life, and incomplete narratives to reveal the incompleteness of life. On the other hand, Woolf abandoned the traditional portrayal of characters and used negation space to portray Jacob as a devoid being. With the negation of physics, audiovisual and visual space, she constructs Jacob as the core of the novel "missing". Finally, this paper discusses the theme connotation of "absence". The loss in modern context is reflected in the modern self-loss and the frustration of interpersonal communication. Jacob's death is the ultimate expression of loss, representing a whole generation of young men killed in war. By revealing the transitory nature of life and the universality of death, the author reveals that their death is both significant and insignificant. Woolf uses novel creation to bridge the "deficiency" in the real world, realizes the "generation" of art, and urges the reader to obtain the coexistence of existence and "absence" in philosophy through the text of the novel.
