[Abstract]:Frank Norris's octopus is often included as a naturalistic masterpiece in American classic novels. Novels are generally considered to expose the existence of human beings under the constraints of the laws of nature. However, the reappearance of the conflict between farmers and railway companies, the critique of the devastating disaster caused by industrial civilization, and the author's ecological concern in the novel text are the reasons for its continuing concern. This paper attempts to interpret Norris's Octopus from the perspective of ecological criticism. This paper first summarizes the main concepts of natural ecology, social ecology and spiritual ecology, and then analyzes the description of nature in Norris's novels, the reproduction of natural crisis and the author's portrayal of the main characters, and discusses the ecological consciousness of Norris. This paper holds that octopus criticizes anthropocentrism and exposes the natural ecological crisis, criticizes the expansion of human desire, exposes the social ecological and spiritual ecological crisis, and advocates respecting the ecosystem and emphasizing the return of human nature. All this reflects the author's deep ecological consciousness and his concern for ecological crisis. The ecological consciousness of octopus can undoubtedly arouse human beings to rethink the current ecological problems, restructure the social development structure, and lead mankind to an eco-friendly future.
