【摘要】：约瑟夫·列文森(JosephR.Levenson,1920-1969)为美国中国学家之翘楚,他对儒教中国现代命运的研究成果在学术界曾引起很大反响和争议,相较于以往对列文森的零散性研究,本文从列文森的学术背景、中国学研究模式及其论证方法三方面进行系统、深入的阐析,有助于揭示列文森中国学研究的特点和学术价值。学术背景方面,列文森所信仰的犹太教同儒家文化一样面临从传统到现代的转型,他对犹太信仰的执着坚持和深切忧虑,使其对中国人的思想困境有着深切的同情和深入的思考;欧美自十九世纪以来形成的以马克思·韦伯为代表的现代化理论是列文森现代化观念的主要来源,当时西方学界普遍认为稳固的传统中国不可能独立发展到现代社会。研究模式方面,列文森的中国学研究继承发展了费正清的"冲击—回应"模式,并深化了该模式的思想阐释力;历史学理论上,列文森承袭并运用欧美相对主义史学的理念和方法,将之发展为自己的历史相对主义研究模式。列文森关注的核心问题之一是文化的普遍性与特殊性的矛盾关系,他所运用的"传统—现代"、"历史—价值"、"地方主义—世界主义"等二元模式,正是文化的普遍性与特殊性关系在不同语境下的表现形式,三者分别从不同研究视角构成一个有机整体。论证方法方面,列文森长于使用的论证方法包括基于词义转变的引证、基于世界历史的对比论证、基于社会变革的比喻论证等,这些论证方法一方面体现了列文森论证方法的多样性,一方面又使其研究文本在表达上迂回曲折,具有特色鲜明的审美倾向和文人气息,形成了列文森独特的学术阐述风格。
[Abstract]:Joseph R. Levensonn (1920-1969) is a leading American Chinese scientist. His research on the modern fate of Confucianism in China has caused great repercussions and controversies in academic circles, compared with the previous scattered research on Levinson, this article from the academic background of Levinson. It is helpful to reveal the characteristics, academic value and academic background of Levinson's study of China. Levinson's Judaism, like the Confucian culture, faces the transition from tradition to modernity. He persevered and deeply worried about the Jewish faith. Make it have deep sympathy and deep thinking to the Chinese thought predicament; The modernization theory developed in Europe and America since 19th century, represented by Max Weber, is the main source of Levinson's concept of modernization. At that time, Western scholars generally thought that the stable traditional China could not develop into modern society independently. In terms of research model, Levinson's Chinese studies inherited and developed John King Fairbank's "shock-response" model. And has deepened the thought explanation power of this pattern; In history theory Levinson inherited and applied the idea and method of relativistic historiography in Europe and the United States. One of the core issues that Levinson focuses on is the contradictory relationship between the universality and particularity of culture, the "tradition-modern" and "history-value" he uses. The dualistic pattern of "localism-cosmopolitanism" is the manifestation of the relationship between universality and particularity of culture in different contexts. The three models form an organic whole from different perspectives of research. Levinson is good at using argumentation methods including citation based on word meaning change, comparative argument based on world history, metaphorical argument based on social change and so on. On the one hand, these argumentation methods reflect the diversity of Levinson's argumentation methods, on the other hand, they make his research text twists and turns in expression, with distinctive aesthetic tendency and literati flavor. It formed Levinson's unique style of academic elaboration.
