中国英语学习者拒绝言语行为中的语用失误研究

【摘要】:当今,语用能力这一概念在语言习得和教学中都获得了广泛关注。尽管二语学习者做出了很大努力来提升自己的语用能力,但是,在某些特定的情景下,他们仍然不知道该如何表现地更加符合目的语的文化规范。换句话说,中国英语学习者目前的语用能力相对较弱。本文以言语行为理论为研究框架,旨在探讨中国英语学习者拒绝言语行为中的语用失误。研究主要探讨三方面问题:(1)中国英语学习者和本族语者在实施拒绝言语行为时在选取拒绝策略时有什么异同?(2)中国英语学习者在实施拒绝言语行为时会犯哪些语用失误及是什么原因导致这些语用失误的?(3)中国英语学习者的语言水平会影响语用失误吗?本研究的实验对象一共有三组,第一组受试者是35名来自山东某高校的高水平英语学习者,第二组受试者是35名来自同一高校的低水平英语学习者。第三组受试者是20名来自加拿大的英语本族语者。研究的实验工具为包括邀请、给予、建议和请求的9个拒绝情境的语篇补全测试,其中,社会地位和社会距离等因素将会被考虑在内。研究结果表明,英语本族语者和中国英语学习者都比较倾向于使用委婉的拒绝策略,且多会使用多种拒绝策结合在一起来降低面子威胁。相对而言,中国英语学习者在拒绝言语行为中表现得更加直接。在本研究中,中国英语学习者所犯的语用失误包括错误使用目的语表达方式或从母语迁移表达方式、不能成功拒绝、违反目标语语言规则及文化规则四类。文化差异以及母语负迁移等被认为是造成这些语用失误的主要原因。此外,研究结果还显示,高水平学习者与低水平学习者所犯的语用失误在频率与类型方面相近,表明学习者的目的语水平对语用失误没有显著影响。
[Abstract]:Nowadays, the concept of pragmatic competence has gained wide attention in language acquisition and teaching. Although L2 learners have made great efforts to improve their pragmatic competence, they still do not know how to behave more in accordance with the cultural norms of the target language in certain specific situations. In other words, the pragmatic competence of Chinese EFL learners is relatively weak. Based on the theory of speech act, this paper aims to explore the pragmatic failure of Chinese EFL learners' refusal speech act. The study focuses on three aspects: (1) what are the similarities and differences between Chinese English learners and native speakers in choosing refusal strategies when implementing refusal speech acts? 2) what languages do Chinese English learners commit when they commit refusal speech acts? Do Chinese EFL learners' language proficiency affect pragmatic failure? There are three groups of subjects in this study. The first group is 35 high level English learners from a university in Shandong province and the second group is 35 low level English learners from the same university. The third group consisted of 20 native speakers from Canada. The experimental tools of the study are text completion tests with 9 rejection situations including invitation, giving, suggestion and request, in which social status and social distance will be taken into account. The results show that both native English speakers and Chinese EFL learners tend to use euphemistic refusal strategies and tend to use a combination of multiple refusal strategies to reduce face threats. Comparatively speaking, Chinese English learners are more direct in refusal speech acts. In this study, the pragmatic failures made by Chinese EFL learners include the wrong use of target language expressions or transfer from their mother tongue, the failure to refuse successfully, and the violation of the target language and cultural rules. Cultural differences and negative transfer of mother tongue are considered to be the main causes of these pragmatic failures. In addition, the results also show that the frequency and type of pragmatic failures committed by high and low level learners are similar, indicating that the target language level has no significant effect on pragmatic failure.
